JANCIS ROBINSON – MASSAL 1945 CARMÉNÊRE 2015 – WINE OF THE WEEK
It may seem a bit perverse not to choose a French wine on Bastille Day, but at least the grape is French, even if it is much more widely planted in Chile than in France today. I was surprised by the sweet and inviting fruit in this wine, it has a subtle tomato note that characterizes many Carmenère, but this one differs from its peers in having a high degree of integrity. I really appreciated its freshness and its roundness. Thanks to its soft and assertive tannins, it will be able to continue evolving for another four years.
The nose is quite elegant and nuanced, with good maturity, without excess, and with integrated aromas of oak. The palate is balanced, medium-bodied and with classic tannins of the variety.
Massal 1945 Carménère 2015 – 90 points.
I found some faint notes of tempera paint, pen ink, mixed with the herbaceous aromas typical of the variety. The palate has powdery tannins, and a savory finish.
